Apprenticeship in Boilermakers Local 374

In the Boilermakers Apprenticeship Program, we take great pride in the extensive training of our apprentices. The following information will explain the job responsibilities, requirements, and challenges for a Boilermaker apprentice.

Job Description

• Loading & unloading materials
• Rigging materials for movement
• Directing crane operations
• Assisting in the building of the cranes boom sections
• Burning, gouging, and welding
• Working in heavy industrial environments
• Interpreting blueprints
• Laying out components
• Steel erection

Boilermaker Work:

• Requires high technical skill, physical strength and stamina
• Is generally an outside job, which means exposure to all types of weather
• Is often performed at heights, sometimes as high as 550 feet
• You may have to travel for work and be away from home for periods of time
• Often involves confined spaces, requiring safe work procedures for access, egress, escape, and rescue

Before Applying for the Apprenticeship, are you:

• Willing and able to do physically demanding work?
• Not afraid of working at great heights or in confined spaces?
• Know that at some point you will have to travel for work.
• Able to complete lessons online?
• Willing to complete 6,000 hours of on-the-job training?
• Willing to attend mandatory classroom training?

Basic Qualifications

Applicants shall meet the following minimum qualifications:

1. Age — All applicants shall be at least 18 years of age. Applicants are required to submit reliable proof of age.
2. Education — Applicants shall be high school graduates or provide proof of equivalent education attainment, such as successful completion of GED.
3. Drug Screening – Applicants must pass a drug screening test at an approved testing site.

WELDING QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants who have welding experience or training will have priority selection over those with no welding qualifications or training. Applicants must provide proof (qualifications, certifications, diplomas, etc.) of welding qualifications and or training.
